It is that time of year again, the days are getting shorter and the weather has a decided nip in the air. For this year, the winter residency is Night Shift, focusing on our 24/7 sleepless society, and we welcome artists Catherine Hotchkiss, Victoria Fleck and Marcus Holtby, who will be staying with us until early December.
Catherine Hotchkiss is a visual artist based in Glasgow; increasingly she has found herself becoming involved in participatory forms of art. Working with collaborative partners, Catherine has previously engaged with both visual and literary projects and is also involved in Impact Art’s Artists Mentoring Program in Glasgow which aims to support community art placements and education.
During her residency at SSW she is developing ideas around Cat’s Cradle, a succession of string figures commonly associated with playground games. She is also making full use of the facilities at SSW engaging with familiar materials and processes. Below she can be seen with technician Uist Corrigan experimenting in the wood workshop, and playing with performative activity in the studios.
Victoria Fleck’s practice responds primarily to place, she is drawn to Northern locations and activities relating to the changes in light and increasing darkness in winter. During her residency she has been spending time repetitively walking within the local environment recording sound and experimenting with materials in the studios.
Markus Holtby is an architect and visual artist working and living in the New York area. His interests lie in the immediate language between drawing, painting and sculpture. He has been using his time at SSW to create abstract, gestural paintings and working intuitively in the forge, forming sculptural steel ribbons.
He is also trying his hand at casting in Aluminium, and here he is cracking open his first cast.
Over the next few weeks we are also welcoming back artist Fanny Lam Christie for an open access residency. Fanny is currently working on a bronze commission for Perth Museum and has been working with students from Duncan of Jordanstone on the project.
