SSW invite you to a Studio Exhibition and Artist Talk by Jeff van Weereld this August..
Monday 19 August to Friday 30 August
Artist Talk, Saturday 24 August
Please be aware this exhibition and the accompanying Artist Talk addresses sensitive issues, with some graphic content. Parental discretion advised.
In November 2012, sculptor Jeff van Weereld had an exhibition in Eden Court Theatre, Inverness, titled ‘the holy truth’. Featuring an implicated commentary on the Catholic Church it had a controversial reception. This work will now be on display at Scottish Sculpture Workshop in Lumsden, from 19th to 30th August. The studio exhibition will include a number of other works as well as a new work titled ‘holy hypocrites’.
On 24th August at 4pm, van Weereld will give a talk about his work in general, providing some background information relating to ‘the holy truth’ and ‘holy hypocrites’. This moves from the artists’ own background in designing scientific instruments, to the making of the work, including the artists’ motivations and personal commentary.
van Weereld (born 1942 in The Netherlands) has been living and working in Scotland since 1984. After a life of designing and making scientific instruments, he has turned his many abilities to sculpture. His wall-hanging and free standing sculptures, mostly metal, usually include optical or electronic elements and are closer to abstract than figurative. He attempts to combine materials with different characteristics and surface structures into harmonic entities which please the eye. He draws inspiration for his work from the world around him, and can on occasion convey an opinion or criticism on societal issues in strong symbolism.
A sound track composed by Olid Nordhausen will accompany the exhibition. To listen to Olid’s work go to www.last.fm/music/Olid+Nordhausen/+tracks
