The exhibition, Try As We Might, is a new body of work from Burtenshaw’s time in residency at SSW. The work is a continuation of his practice which embodies a study of the references shared by artists and tradesmen, conflating the influences of having grown up working with his father who was a sheet metal worker, and having been a fine art student at Goldsmiths in London.

Burtenshaw works with the materials historically valued within sculpture, such as granite or bronze, and explores how they translate into domestic contexts. For example, granite work tops on pre-fabricated melamine units are translated  into art language as sculpture acknowledging some material slippage we often fail to notice. His work juxtaposes these materials and their shared trade references into sculptural works where granite is placed on carpet tiles, cast bronze is placed on high glossed MDF and abstract objects are created within standard trade dimensions.

Come and join us in celebrating the winter season with art works, mulled wine and mince pies. We look forward to seeing you here.Event: Try As We Might, New Work by Benjamin Burtenshaw
