Gavin Smith and Daniel Seiple
Thursday 30 August 2012
7.30 – 9.30 PM
Local artist Gavin Smith, and Daniel Seiple of KUNSTrePUBLIK and Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum will be delivering talks on their artistic practices in conjunction with SSW’s Slow Prototypes programme.
Daniel Seiple has been working alongside Gavin Smith, a local woodworker, with Paul O’Neill as writer-respondent, as part of Slow Prototypes, a curated project by SSW. Slow Prototypes encompasses three collaborations between contemporary artists and artist-artisans, each followed closely by a writer and taking place between August and December 2012.
Gavin Smith was born in Fraserburgh in 1951, and now runs an independent studio-based practice in Corgarff, Strathdon. Gavin originally trained as an engineer, prior to studying at Gray’s School of Art. He went on to teach all aspects of Fine Art and Design at Aberdeen College from 1982 until 2004. His engineering background often informs his work of primarily drawing and woodcarving. He takes on commissions ranging from gypsy caravans, to heraldry pieces and fairground carousels, and has works in Grenoble, France, Alford’s Transport Museum, Migvie Chapel, and Kintore Arms, Inverurie. He has also set up environmental art initiatives across the South of Scotland, introducing school pupils to the idea of personal footprints on the earth’s environment.
Daniel Seiple is an American artist based in Berlin. His research and art reflect the formation and obfuscation of borders, latching onto geographic, political and historical issues of the day, while considering their practical necessity in everyday life. Seiple also founded Homie (Berlin, 2005) a one-room exhibition space in his apartment, and co-founded artist collectives The E-Team (2000-2002) and KUNSTrePUBLIK, in which he has worked since 2006 as curator, artist, researcher and activist, as part of Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum and in other contexts, including Werkleitz Festival (Halle/Saale, 2010), id Barri (Barcelona, 2009), Vasl Arts (Pakistan, 2008) and the 5th berlin biennial for contemporary art (2008).
Daniel will be in residence at SSW until the 4th of September for Slow Prototypes.
