Catch us at Banff this weekend – 26 & 27 May

We are really excited to be participating in COAST Festival 2012 this year!!

Ceramics by the Seashore – Paper Kiln Firing

Scottish Sculpture Workshop (SSW) and Gray’s School of Art are coming together for COAST Festival 2012, in the first of a number of collaborative projects over the next year.

Artists in Residence and staff at SSW will be working with students and staff from Gray’s School of Art on the grounds of Banff Castle, building and firing a ceramic kiln constructed from paper. Items made by the artists, students and participants of workshops led by Nic Whitehouse the week before will be fired. These types of kilns are an interesting and exciting alternative to other smoke/woodfire ceramic techniques.

The paper kiln process begins when the dried ceramic objects are placed in a bed of sawdust and kindling. A tepee frame is then built up around them and covered in magazine pages dipped in a clay liquid. Once this is complete the fire will be lit and the kiln will be placed over it. At this point the kiln can become extremely smokey, although it should die down after an hour and a half to two hours. Salt and sugar, known to produce reduction glaze effects (through reactions with the clay), will be put into the kiln before it is sealed and left overnight. The kiln will be cut open the next morning and left to cool before extracting the finished pieces of work.

Many hands make light work, and all are welcome to join in with the kiln building on the day – although beware of getting your hands dirty!

Art in Granite – Thursday 17 May, 2012, Aberdeen

Art in Granite
Scottish Sculpture Workshop presents an art panel presentation and discussion during Aberdeen’s second Granite Festival.
Aberdeen’s 2012 Granite Festival is back by popular demand! The new programme had been launched by Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums and Scottish Sculpture Workshop (SSW) is delighted to take part. On Thursday, 17 May, 6.30-8.30pm, at Cowdry Hall, SSW presents Art in Granite - a panel discussion and presentation about the medium of granite and the artists who work with it.

Granite carving was a core component of the SSW programming from its inception in 1979 until 2002, and became a major contributor to the works presented in the biennial Scottish Sculpture Open exhibitions. This panel will feature alumni of SSW’s Granite Carving Symposiums, as well as local sculptors who continue to work in Aberdeenshire Granite today. Drawing on their own histories with this beautiful natural resource, the panel will reveal the skills, ideas and techniques of working with such a stunning material. The panel members will each give short presentations, followed by an open discussion and questions from the floor.
We are very pleased to participate in the celebrations which acknowledge Aberdeen’s well deserved moniker of the Granite City, and look forward to promoting this beautiful medium and supporting its use in art in the years to come.
All events are admission free. To book please call the Aberdeen Box Office on 01224 641122 or go to boxofficeaberdeen.com.

Students galore!

SSW is very sad that students Lisa, Adriana, Teun, Sjors, Hannes and Daniel from AKI in Holland have left, they were a fantastic group and left some lovely messages on the back of the wax room door. Next up were some hellos and goodbyes to Morganne, Rose-Marie, Daniela and Marcia from Clermont Ferrand in France. They made us laugh and cooked some fantastic food. At the moment we are finishing off our Spring Student season with Marina and Rachael from Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen. All of the students have made some great work and we look forward to hearing more from them in the future – and to welcoming them back to SSW as future artists!

Graeme Beagrie from RBS visits SSW for the day…

On Thursday 8 March, Graeme Beagrie, Relationship Manager for the Royal Bank of Scotland in Aberdeen, spent a day in the SSW foundry. Graeme spent the day getting to know some of the regional artists and international visitors at the workshops, learning about mould making and the foundry processes. The picture above shows him pulling the crucible out of the furnace, getting ready to pour the molten metal into an artists mould. Graeme did a fantastic job and we hope to see him back at SSW in the future!

The SSW foundry is one of the few hands on artist-accessible foundries in the UK, where they are taken through every stage of the process. We have artists from near and far every year that come to Lumsden in order to make their work. Regular student groups come out to SSW to take advantage of this facility, and this spring we have student groups from AKI in Holland and Clermont Ferrand in France, as well as two student residents from Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen.

SSW Technical Courses and Workshops

Accepting Spring/Summer registration for Technical Courses and Workshops – make sure you don’t miss out.

This year we have the Stained Glass workshop with Gordon Watt, back by popular demand, along with 3D Working, offering an opportunity to explore sculptural techniques.

For those budding metal artists, we have a Metal Casting in Bronze course that will take you through all the processes and techniques required to cast your own metal work. We are also very lucky to have visiting Bob Johnson, who has taught at both Northumbria University and Newcastle College for a number of years. He will be teaching a comprehensive Welding – Metal Art course at the beginning of July.

For those who prefer ceramics, we are very pleased to be able to offer the opportunity of experiencing an Anagama wood-firing. Led by Nancy Fuller, who has trained with a number of masters, participants will be able to fire work using this traditional Japanese method of wood firing. Anagama fired pieces have a beautiful glaze finish that comes from the clay itself, in the high temperatures reached during the 72-hour firing process.

Firing the Anagama

Artist Nancy Fuller -

“Taiwanese by birth but raised in Scotland, I originally trained as a printmaker.  I discovered wood-fired ceramics when I returned to Taiwan 7 years ago. After preliminary studies I underwent a month-long residency at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, Japan. Shigaraki is one of the ‘Six Ancient Kilns’ of Japan and continues to produce its own unique style of wood-fired pottery to this day.

Here I took the unusual step of seeking a local anagama (a type of Japanese wood-fired kiln) master to study under, which led to my introduction to Suzuki Shigeji. A year later, I embarked on training that saw me immerse myself in the language, culture and environment of this ancient pottery producing region. I returned to the UK in 2007, and was awarded a Creative Development Grant from the Scottish Arts Council to build my own anagama in rural Aberdeenshire.

Opportunities to study with Nakazato Takashi at the Anderson Ranch Arts Center, US, and the International Ceramic Research Center, Denmark, have furthered my practice in terms of both my technical skills and ideas about wood-firing and has led me to end my firings in cooling reduction.

I continue to be inspired by Japanese mediaeval tsubos (jars) and fire my kiln once or twice a year with a mixture of split pine and beech for three nights and four days, to a top temperature of 1200°C.”

There are limited awards available, so make sure you get your application in. Dates are flexible, subject to availability. For more information visit the SSW website or email emily@ssw.org.uk.

15th Anniversary of USUK Symposium – taking place this summer at SSW and SAW

USUK Iron Symposium is celebrating 15 years and will take place this summer at Salem Art Works, New York, USA and Scottish Sculpture Workshop, UK.  This is the 13th USUK Cast Iron Symposium, and for the first time will take place in both countries consecutively.

US Component: Friday 15th June – Sunday 30th June 2012

UK Component: Friday 7th July – Sunday 22nd July 2012

During each 15 day symposium, internationally selected artists will produce work in cast iron with experimental and traditional sand molds using a coke fired iron cupola furnace. In addition to artists’ presentations, panels and technical demonstrations, artists learn from each other by working together in the critically engaged environment created by the symposium and its unique sites.

No previous casting experience is necessary – for further information and application details please visit the website.

To keep updated on all USUK news follow the Symposium on facebook.
